Tuesday
This morning we head to the lovely village of Waldringfield for a relaxing 2-hour cruise with tea/coffee and scones along the River Deben, one of the most beautiful and wildlife-rich havens on the Suffolk coast. We continue our day by spending a couple of leisurely hours in Aldeburgh, a charming and elegant seaside town on the Suffolk coast. Known for its timeless atmosphere, shingle beach and traditional fishing heritage. Once an important Tudor port, today it is celebrated for its colourful beach huts, award-winning fish and chips, and distinctive mix of independent shops, galleries and cafés. The town has strong cultural ties, most notably as the home of composer Benjamin Britten. We return with time to relax before our evening meal.
Wednesday
This morning brings a guided tour of the world-famous Anglo-Saxon burial site of Sutton Hoo, the beautiful 255-acre estate where one of Britain's greatest archaeological finds was made in 1939. We discover the story of the amazing 7th century ship burial of an Anglo-Saxon king, view the award-winning exhibition and explore the full-size reconstruction of the burial chamber. (Please note: accessing the burial mounds requires a 10- to 15-minute outdoor level walk) We have some free time for refreshments following our tour & to explore at leisure.
Thursday
Following breakfast this morning we visit the Beth Chatto Gardens. Created from wasteland in the 1960s by plantswoman Beth Chatto OBE, this collection of informal themed gardens illustrates the principle of ‘finding the right place for the right plant’ and include everything from a Gravel Garden of unirrigated plants to a shady Woodland Garden and serene Water Garden all a joy to wander around.
Friday
Unfortunately its time to say goodbye to Ipswich and the Salthouse harbour Hotel as we check out and commence our journey back to Leeds
